Special Teams Often Decide NHL Games — and Your Bets
There was a game last season that crystallised everything I believe about special teams and betting. Two evenly matched teams, identical moneyline odds, nearly identical five-on-five metrics. The differentiator was special teams: one team ran the league’s third-best power play at 26 per cent, while the other limped along at 15 per cent. The team with the elite power play drew four penalties, converted twice, and won 3-1. The moneyline odds had not reflected this disparity at all. That was the night I started building special teams into every pre-game assessment.

Power play and penalty kill are the two pillars of NHL special teams, and their influence on game outcomes is disproportionate to the time they occupy. Special-teams situations account for roughly 15-20 per cent of total playing time in a typical NHL game, but they can generate 30-40 per cent of the goals. A single power-play goal can decide a contest where approximately 75 per cent of games are settled by one or two goals. If you are not factoring special teams into your betting analysis, you are ignoring one of the most impactful variables in the sport.
The market accounts for special teams at a broad level — teams with strong power plays tend to be shorter-priced favourites — but the granularity is often lacking. Bookmakers price games based on overall team ratings that blend five-on-five and special-teams performance into a single number. A team with elite five-on-five play and a mediocre power play might receive the same odds as a team with average five-on-five play and a dominant power play. In games where penalty rates are expected to be high — rivalry matchups, games with aggressive officiating crews — that distinction matters enormously.
Power-Play Efficiency and Its Correlation with Moneyline Value
I tracked power-play conversion rates against moneyline outcomes for three full seasons, and the correlation was striking. Teams with top-ten power plays won moneyline bets at a higher rate than their overall record suggested, particularly in games where they drew four or more penalties. The effect was strongest when the opposing penalty kill ranked in the bottom third of the league — a matchup that the broad moneyline odds rarely reflected with sufficient precision.

Power-play percentage — the rate at which a team scores during man-advantage situations — is the headline metric, but it is not the only one that matters. Power-play expected goals per 60 minutes, a measure of shot quality during the advantage, is a more stable and predictive indicator of future power-play success. A team converting at 28 per cent on a power play that generates only average expected goals is likely riding a hot shooting streak that will regress. A team converting at 20 per cent with elite expected goals is probably due for improvement. The distinction between these two teams creates betting value that power-play percentage alone cannot reveal.

Teams with an expected goals share above 50 per cent at five-on-five are generally considered to be controlling play, but elite teams push their xGF% to 52-53 per cent or higher. When you layer a top-five power play on top of an above-average five-on-five xGF%, you get a team that generates scoring chances at a rate the market sometimes underestimates, particularly against opponents with weak penalty kills. These matchups are the sweet spots for moneyline value on the favourite side — the rare situations where backing the favourite at compressed odds is justified by the underlying data.
Penalty Kill and Totals: The Defensive Side of Special Teams
Penalty kill is the less glamorous sibling of the power play, but for totals betting, it is arguably more important. A team’s ability to kill penalties directly suppresses the total goals scored in a game, and the market’s totals lines do not always differentiate between teams with elite penalty kills and teams with leaky ones.

When two teams with top-ten penalty kills meet, the probability of the game going under the posted total increases meaningfully. Both teams are less likely to concede goals during man-down situations, and the special-teams phases of the game — which would normally contribute one or two goals — become low-event passages of play. I look for these matchups specifically when the total is set at 6.0 or higher, because the under becomes a value proposition when the market has priced in league-average special-teams production from both sides.
Conversely, when a team with a bottom-five penalty kill faces an opponent with a top-five power play, the over on the total gains significant support. The penalty-kill team is likely to concede at least one power-play goal, which pushes the total scoring environment higher than the full-game line suggests. If that same game features two teams that are also above average at five-on-five offence, you have a compounding effect: high-quality chances at even strength plus high-quality chances on the power play equals a game environment where 6.5 or even 7.0 total goals is achievable.
The practical application is to check penalty-kill and power-play rankings before betting on any totals market. A two-minute check against the current league standings for PP% and PK% gives you an informational advantage that most casual bettors do not bother to acquire. It will not predict the outcome of every game, but over a season, the cumulative edge from aligning your totals bets with special-teams matchups is one of the most reliable patterns in NHL betting.
Pairing PP/PK Data with Totals and Period Bets
Special-teams data becomes even more powerful when you pair it with over/under and period betting. Power plays are not evenly distributed across the three periods of an NHL game. Referees tend to call the rulebook more strictly in the first period, which means more penalties and more special-teams opportunities early in the game. By the third period, officiating typically loosens, and even-strength play dominates.

This distribution creates an angle for first-period betting. If a team with a dominant power play is facing an undisciplined opponent that takes frequent penalties, the first period becomes a high-probability window for a power-play goal. Betting the over on the first-period total, or backing the team with the superior power play to win the first period, leverages a specific special-teams matchup in a specific time frame — a level of precision that full-game markets cannot offer.

I also use special-teams data to refine live betting decisions during games. If the first period produces two or three penalties without a power-play goal, and both teams have strong penalty kills, the under on the full-game total becomes more attractive. The game is demonstrating that special-teams phases are not producing goals, which shifts the total scoring expectation downward from the pre-game line. Conversely, if an early penalty results in a quick power-play goal and the penalised team retaliates with an aggressive response — drawing another penalty of their own — the game environment is signalling a higher-scoring affair.
Play-driving statistics are an effective indicator of predicting a team’s long-term results in hockey, as analysts have noted, because the margins are so tight that close plays and lucky bounces go a long way in deciding short-term results. Special teams are one of the sharpest play-driving indicators available, and when you combine them with period-level data and live-game observations, you create a multi-dimensional view of the game that the standard moneyline or totals line cannot capture.
Building special-teams analysis into your NHL betting process does not require advanced modelling. It requires checking four numbers before every game: home team PP%, home team PK%, away team PP%, away team PK%. Cross-reference those with the game’s total line and your assessment of the likely officiating standard, and you have a framework that improves both your full-game and period-level bets with minimal additional effort.
